PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Paul Rostrup introduced this week's speaker Brian Breckles, the President & CEO from Junior Achievement Waterloo Region. Brian has a longtime connection with the area as a graduate from Laurier where he earned his business degree while playing football. His presentation began with a video outlining the worldwide organization's impact in preparing young people for work and careers in business since 1919. Being a hands-on learning experience with local business professionals etc.; the many programs help to inspire young people to succeed in a world economy. Locally, the JA has had a strong influence in Waterloo Region since 1970 by providing financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness. Their in-class programs are focused on Grade 7 & 8 students with programs of "Dollars with Sense" and "Economics for Success. There is a pilot project at Margaret Ave. P. S. which Brian hopes to then have those students connect in high school with other programs. He finds that students really connect to activities like the 'Stock Market' competition. Since financial literacy is not part of the curriculum; he feels that JA programs fill that gap. Helping students design a business and create a product for sale offers real life experiences which 75% of the students stated were of great help to them. JA also trains volunteers to assist with their programs so any club member interested can contact him for more information.
Neil Swayze thanked Brian for his presentation and JA's work in our schools in the region.
