President's Comments
Past-President Louise welcomed all to our meeting today.
Bell Ringers
Past-President Louise thanked our Ukrainian Committee members and other club members who assisted with the Fundraising event at the recent Pickleball Tournament and named them the Bell Ringers for this week.
Happy Jar
Shawky Fahel is happy that he was able to visit Juno Beach at one time with both his father and his son. He is also pleased that both of his children were born on November 11.
Louise Gardiner was happy to represent our club at the recent Coalition of Muslim Women Gala, a very exciting women’s only event. She was pleased to see fellow member Fauzia Mazhar there, who is continuing to recover from her serious injuries over a year ago.
Lumi Mironescu is pleased to have been able to spend some more time with our exchange student Jonas and include her daughters. Most recently in Burlington and Centreville.
Oksana Tereshchenko is happy with the results of our fundraising at the recent Pickleball Tournament and thanked all members who assisted.
Club Announcements
Youth Exchange
Our exchange student, Jonas, is continuing to do well. His host family will be away next week so Jonas will be staying with committee chair Boyd Pendleton in Waterloo. This will be a great opportunity for members to reach out and involve him in any family or special activities /events that may have planned. Contact Boyd if you have a possibility for Jonas.
Jonas has the opportunity to visit Queen’s Park, along with other district exchange students, on November 14 but we need drivers – one to get him to the Burlington Go Station in the morning and one to pick him up in the afternoon. If you are able and interested you could join the group in addition to doing the driving. Please contact Boyd if you are able to assist.
Recruitment for our outbound students for next year is underway, again contact Boyd if you have any suggestions or questions.
Online Auction
Our
Online Auction Fundraiser is now open for bidding and is off to a good start. But there is still time to add items or sponsors – contact Neil or Bill if you have any last donations. Now is the time to be promoting the Auction to family, friends and colleagues and don’t forget to check it out and find your own deals!
Also available this year are the new Friends of Ukraine 2024 calendars. Click

The Board has approved the membership in the club applications from Luminita (Ellen) Cristache, in the classification of Talent Acquisition Specialist with Lumi Mironescu as her sponsor.
Any member who opposes this membership proposal must put such opposition in writing and forward it to the club secretary (Bill Proctor, bill.proctor@bell.net) no
later than Sunday, November 12th.
Program Highlights
Our program today was our annual Remembrance Day Observance. The program began with a video prepared by Ross Newkirk that provided a virtual experience of visiting a cenotaph presentation. It also comprised information on the terrible human toll (deaths, injuries and family losses) inflicted by wars. A very emotional recital of In Flanders Fields by Leonard Cohen and a prayer of Remembrance were included.

The second part of the program was a presentation by member Robert Shipley. Robert is a former soldier but in the early 1970’s, as a civilian , he was contracted by the Canadian Military to travel to Cyprus to make observations of the peace Keeping operations between the Greeks and Turks with which the Canadian Forces were assisting. The primary method of recording these observations were by hand sketches, many of which were shown in his presentation. Robert provided background information on the purpose of the peace keeping mission and what was involved. Recently, after 44 years he returned to Cyprus to sketch many of the same locations. Forty of his sketches are now part of the permanent collection in the Canadian War Museum. He has also produced a book – To Mark Our Place – which is a history of Canadian War Memorials.
Closing Remarks & Reminders
