Program Highlights

Dave  Martindale introduced our guest speaker, Margaret Van Haren. Margaret was a physiotherapist working at Grand River hospital for 15 years before retiring. Having a passion for travel and for helping others; she decided to volunteer at the Ekenywa organization in Kenya in November, 2018; to assist with occupational therapy for children and assessing their needs for wheelchairs. That lead to being involved in helping bring water and sanitation systems to rural schools in Kenya. Many children are having to walk 5 km each way each day to bring water back to their family residences before going off to school which could be another 5+ km. The water taken from streams and rivers is not necessarily healthy causing many waterbourne illnesses. Most schools are overcrowded with no running water or toilet facilities. Ekenywa offers the community help to build schools with washroom facilities and hand washing. They do this by collecting rainwater from the roof of the school in cisterns for drinking. They also help dig wells that can only be used for 'grey' water uses in toilets or for irrigation. They bring in electricity for water filters and pumps but they are very expensive so the community sets up a kiosk that people can use to purchase clean water from and thus raising funds for replacement parts. The whole community must take part in the construction of the school etc., in order, to receive the funds. The latrines collect the waste material for biogas that can be used for cooking. The grey water is used to irrigate fields that grow vegetables etc. for use by the school to feed their students. Well water is high in floride which is a health risk and if drank causes Osteoporosis and darken teeth, so the cisterns are a necessity.
Dave thanked Margaret for her talk and presented her with our certificate to immunize 100 children in her name against polio.
