Happy Jar

Howard Pell had several items to be happy about.  First, his second book will be released in two weeks’ time (let him know if you will attend the launch).  Second, he has made his 49th blood donation, and is looking forward to number 50 (along with 49 friends).

Karen Redman, in preparing for her upcoming campaign, has reflected on “what would my life be without Rotary”.

Jill Melanson has been advised that she is now cancer free.  Further, she will be participating in a health fundraiser, to which members are welcome to sponsor her.

Ed Fowler, with son now a university grad and gainfully employed, now has an empty nest that he can share peacefully with Martha.

Louise Gardiner celebrates a recent trip with Graham to Mexico and looks forward to a cruise around Newfoundland.  She has also joined the District Training Committee and has assumed co-chair responsibilities for the upcoming PETS 1 and RLI.  It is noted that RLI 1 is free is you sign up shortly after becoming a Rotarian, and the Club covers RLI 2 and 3.

Paul Rostrup has taken more vacation than normal, and is looking forward to becoming president next year.  He notes that he has signed up for RLI, as well as the Hamburg RI Convention.

John Webster has managed to visit both Mexico and Ireland, and his daughter is getting married.  Sheila managed to arrange a large shower in a week.

Bell Ringer(s)

President Richard indicated that he was somewhat surprized at the amount of activity that occurs at the Committee level, now that he has participated in a number of Committee meetings.  As bell ringers he noted the Car Draw committee, the on-line Auction committee, and the Strategic Review committee.-

Club Announcements

Neil Swayze reminded us that the On-Line Auction kick-off is only seven weeks away.  In addition to our individual goals of $500 of auction items, he also noted the high return items of gift cards, sports tickets (try to ensure that the game is at least one week after closing so that we can get the ticket to the purchaser).  Sponsorships are also important as we hope to cover our costs with these.

Martin Jones noted our Nutrition Program will start up shortly at Forest Hill public school each Thursday and Friday.  Time commitment is generally less than 30 minutes.  Newcomers are welcome – just contact Martin.

Wayne Boehler announced that we are in need of someone to take the afternoon shift this Saturday (September 15).  Martin Jones will cover the morning, but is not able to stay for the afternoon.

50/50 Draw

The jack of Hearts eluded John Webster, Martin Jones and Ted Wellhauser, leaving the $286 for next week’s draw.

Program Highlights

District Governor John Gilvesy related a “story” about a man with shingles, where he garnered a couple of lessons.  First, we should not assume that we have all of the answers – full communication is important.  Second, we are the lucky ones.  Finally, we have something to deliver.

He quoted RI President Barry Rassin on RI’s vision “together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.”

There are three priorities – strengthen clubs, increase public image and increase humanitarian services.

Our goal, in order to receive a citation is to add two members – but he suggested that we aim for five.

In enhancing our public image, John suggests considering an alumni event for past Rotarians, former exchange students and RYLA participants.  Remind them of what Rotary has meant to them – and what they can contribute to Rotary.

John has long been a promoter of Micro Financing projects.  His Club is currently applying for a Global Grant in this area.  They are encouraging other Clubs to participate in this project (perhaps $1,500) – and they will administer the application.  With the matching grants available, they could well have a project worth $1 million – which in Honduras would get a lot of people started on their small businesses.

Closing Remarks & Reminders

Next week's meeting is not to be missed.  It will feature Martin Jones discussing his recent trip to Kenya, with a primary purpose to visit some of the RAWEF scholarship recipients.  There will be a number of guests and special events.
