Happy Jar

1. Ernie Ginsler was happy to inform members of the great time he & his wife had at the theatre seeing Coriolanus and Rocky Horror Show. He was also happy that a dear friend was recovering from a heart attack and wanted members to be aware of a new devise one can use on their key chain to hold aspirin which was a life saver for his friend. The devise called a "key to Life" container that holds two aspirin can be ordered through their website KeytoLifeGroup.com

2. Louise Gardiner was delighted to let members know that her husband, Graham, had a very successful six month check-up on his lung transplant on June 21st and has been cleared for travel, so they went to Cancun, Mexico for a holiday.

3. Jess Moat, our exchange student, just got back from a wonderful trip down east with 26 other exchange students from the district and had a marvelous time.

4. Karen Redman was delighted to tell members that her children are interested in joining our satellite Rotary club which was something she felt they were not inclined to do, so it was a pleasant surprise for a proud Rotarian Mom.

5. President Richard Bruckeder was pleased to feel so welcome by all members as their new president for 2018 - 2019 and especially thankful to past president Dave for all his assistance.

Club Announcements

1. Wayne Boehler & Adrian DeCoo manned the booth for selling Car Draw tickets at the Cruisin' on King event and managed sales of $840.00. Well Done, guys! As well, we were able to take in another $2250.00 from the registrations for a Grand total of  $3090.00. As well, Wayne needs to see if there is any interest in going to the 'Plough match' this Sept. 18 to 23rd near Chatham. He needs seven members to commit to go, so let him know ASAP so he can contact them.

2. Howard Pell also reminded members about the sign up poster or online slots for the Car Draw at the St. Jacobs market every Thursday and/or Saturday each month until October. There are 16 to 18 half day slots to fill so if everyone took a slot or two then we would quickly fill them for two months. Think about it; ask a family member or friend to join you. Howard also stopped by the "Polio Plus" booth at RI Conference and picked up some credit card pockets for your cellphone. They just peel off and stick to the back of your cellphone. You can donate if you wish but Howard handed them out to members at the meeting.

50/50 Draw

Special draw activity offered by Bill Proctor which called for those having their number called to also select a prize from the prize table of Rotary T-shirts, cap, stetson, denim shirt etc. Tom Mennill's numbers were called twice and President Richard once with no luck. Pot stands at $104.

Program Highlights

President Richard introduced our guest speaker, Gehan Sabry, an Egyptian born social activist who is a proud Canadian who champions human rights. She advocates for the underdog and is a courageous challenger of societal injustices. She has been the editor & publisher of "Cross Cultures" magazine; a bi-monthly magazine that promotes mutual respect and racial harmony. She has received many awards which include the Oktoberfest Multicultural Woman of the Year award in 1993 to the latest award from Ontario Leading Women, Building Communities 2010.

She spoke of her endeavours to have the viewpoints of a variety of people expressing their thoughts on multiculturalism in Canada. These opinions vary greatly from Canadians and new immigrants. Are we really a society that promotes tolerance, respect and diversity? Presently, she is organizing the creation of a monument in Victoria park that promotes diversity and mutual respect. She has commissioned indigenous artists to etch a rock and hopes to have the unveiling ceremony this summer. She would hope that our club would support this endeavour. She feels that this symbolic monument is needed since our tolerance and respect for others has diminished in the last decade to a more "US" and "THEM" approach which she feels is less welcoming and inclusive then when she arrived in Canada 30 years ago.

Karen Redman thanked Gehan for her thoughts and presented her with our certificate of thanks and 100 immunizations for polio in her name.

Closing Remarks and Reminders

In Closing, President Richard reminded all members to sign up for the Car Draw slots when you can. Richard also presented Adrian with the wine quiz bottle of wine he won from last meeting. Adrian selected a Rotary T-shirt from the prize table.
