The good news is that we get to keep all of the registration fees! We assist the city with the organization of the event and we earn some easy money and get to see all of the great cars first-hand and up close. About 6 volunteers are needed and if you can only make part of the afternoon that is okay. Family and friends are welcome to join us. ABO works to reimagine the future of creative spaces through dedicated research projects and an engaged network of supportive partners. 44 Gaukel is a shared creative workplace located at the core of Downtown Kitchener. The City of Kitchener operates this creative community through a partnership with anchor tenants ArtsBuild Ontario, a provincial arts service organization dedicated to realizing long-term solutions for arts and creative spaces, and the Accelerator Centre, a technology incubator dedicated to building and scaling globally-competitive technology. An Introduction to Pickle Ball Pickle Ball is a relatively new, and growing in popularity, racket sport. On August 29 you are invited to join our own Mike Ellis and Martin Jones to learn the basics of this fun and easy sport. There is no cost and rackets will be supplied but inside running shoes are required. Family and friends are welcome to join in this co-ed activity open to the Rotary Clubs of Kitchener and Kitchener Westmount. Due to available court space we have a limit of 36 participants so register early, and unless we reach capacity sooner, the registration deadline is August 25.

The Rotary Clubs of KW and Kiwanis KW Dr. Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourou, her PhD supervisor at the time. They published this Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester in New York State. Together they paved the way toward the most intense laser pulses ever created. Strickland was a research associate at the National Research Council Canada, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a member of technical staff at Princeton University. In 1997, she joined the University of Waterloo, where her ultrafast laser group develops high-intensity laser systems for nonlinear optics investigations Please join us for a rare glimpse into the life and research of a renown Canadian Scientist and Nobel Laureate. In addition to a tour of their facilities we will hear about their programs and services while sharing their passion for what they do. Our hosts for the evening will be - Kitchener Rotary Member, Sarah Shafiq, Director of Advocacy, Research & Youth Programming and Uzma Bhutto, Director of Development & Training. Free parking is available in the municpal lot directly opposite their offices after 5:00 p.m. Following the program we will gather at a nearby restaurant for fellowship and dinner. The Orange Shirt / National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Day Walk Each year, September 30, a federal statutory holiday, marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Wear Orange Orange Shirt Day, also taking place on September 30, is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Local Event One of the local events in recognition of Orange Shirt Day will be a walk from the Healing of the Seven Generations building at 300 Frederick Street to Victoria Park starting at 10:00 a.m. There will be drumming and Indigenous dancing once the group arrives at Victoria Park. As part of our club’s efforts toward Indigenous Learnings and Reconciliation we are inviting members who are interested and available (along with family and friends) to wear orange and join in the walk. We will be gathering at the Frederick Street and Edna Street corner of the Frederick Street Mall at 9:15 a.m. We will have Rotary Vests to wear as well. So we know who all to expect and so we can join/walk as a group we are asking those planning to attend to please register by Thursday evening, Sepetmber 28, at 6:00 p.m. |

GIZHAWENIMEN A Recognition Celebration The local indigenous community, supporters, and politicians gather together for a potluck fall feast to celebrate opportunities provided by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The group formerly know as Aunties and Uncles, promotes and facilitates permanent connections, safety, and belonging for indigenous youth who are vulnerable, at risk, in care or kinship, have aged out of the system, or who have lost family connections. In our ongoing efforts to develop positive working relationships with the local indigenous community we will be assisting with this event - helping with set up or clean up, serving food, providing support. The event itself runs from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. The event is open to the public and is a great event for all to help increase our knowledge and understanding of indigenous culture. Members of our Indigenous Relations Committee will be attending but additional support from a few additonal members will be appreciated. If unable to attend for the full event, assisting for part will be fine, please indicate when you are available in the comment box when you register. Online Auction Sign Distribution - Your Help is Needed! Response Requested! A significant number of people who purchase items on our Online Auction indicate that they learn about the auction through our roadside / lawn signs. And, again this year we need your help to distribute these throughout the region. Our Sign Distribution has two components again this year. 1. All members are asked to pick up 2 or 3 signs to put up at their homes and/or place of business. 2. We need an additional 8 to 10 members to take about 10 to 15 signs each and distribute them in a geographical area in the region assigned to you. This will only take about 1.5 to 2 hours and after you have picked up your signs you can set them up as soon as you are able. We will be meeting a the Loading Dock Area behind PS International, Hubert's Office / Warehouse at 975 Bleams Road from 9:00 to 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 21. All members are asked to respond by Thursday, October 19 and indicate in the Comment Box that: 1. You will participate in the full Sign Distribution in the region and pick up the signs on Saturday. OR 2. You will just be able to take 2 or 3 signs for use at your home and/or office and will pick these up on Saturday. OR 3. You would like to have 2 or 3 signs to have at your home and/or office but are unable to pick them up on Saturday and will need to make alternate arrangements to get them. We can deliver! OR 4. Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser Thousands of displaced Ukrainian families with children came to Canada to escape the ongoing war in Ukraine. Many have settled in Waterloo region. Kitchener Rotary and Pickleball of Waterloo Wellington Region have teamed up to host a Fundraising Pickleball Tournament and Ukrainian Fun-Fair in the support of Ukrainian kids. The event is being organized and run by our Ukrainian Committee but some additional help from members is needed during the event itself. The Tournament runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but help is needed starting at 8:00 a.m. and going to 6:00 p.m. which has been divided into two shifts - 8 to 1 and 1 to 6. If you are able to help out please indicate which shift, or both, you are able to attend. Please sign up by Thursday, October 26. |
