The Alzheimer Society of Waterloo-Wellington Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to deteriorate over time. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging and is irreversible. While Alzheimer's has always been with us, attempts to understand and identify the disease and its impact didn't come about until very recently in human history. The Mission of the Alzheimer Society is: To alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and to promote the search for causes, treatments and a cure. January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and on January 12, Tom Connelly, the Volunteer and Events Coordinator for the Waterloo-Wellington Alzheimer Society, will be our guest speaker providing details on this debilitating disease and outlining volunteer opportunities with the society. The KW Habilitation Farm - Supporting Folks with Food Insecurity For the past 12 years the KW Habilitation Farm has been growing fresh organic produce for the community at KW Habilitation. In 2025 they grew $60,000.00 worth of produce to help supply their folks with nutritious veggies to their menus. Each week a large donation goes to their affordable housing apartment building 20+ apartments, House of Friendship and 3-4 times yearly to Soup Sisters. They are helping folks with food insecurity and to enhance their diets with nutritious seasonal veggies. Joining us for the presentation will be Jenny Weickert, the Farm Coordinator and Laura Bredschneider, the Agricultural Farmer. During the presentation they will explore all the good they do in our community, and how their Farm has made an impact. The farm is in need of storage at our Rural Location for tools, row covers, netting, crates etc. NB! Pre-Registration and meal selection is required! Members for Life: According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s Landmark study (2022), nearly one million Canadians will be living with dementia by 2030. As our population ages, service clubs are likely to notice signs of dementia among their own members. At the RIA, we know that when people experience changes with their memory, they often stay silent and may withdraw from the activities they love out of fear, embarrassment, or a mistaken belief that they can no longer contribute. Service clubs may lose members without ever knowing the real reason why. Please join us on Monday, April 13 as Danielle Krisman, the Community Relations Manager and Shira Ginsler, the Fundraising Manager from Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging present an overview of dementia and debunk the myths and misconceptions that can lead to stigma and social isolation. They will share practical strategies for creating inclusive environments within our club so that members experiencing cognitive changes can continue to serve and stay connected to the fellowship they value. A Kitchener Rotarians In Action Project As part of our ongoing support of A Better Tent City, again this year, we will be assisting with the preparation and planting of several raised vegetable and herb gardens for the residents there and your help is requested. This is our last project of the year in support of ABTC. The project is scheduled for Saturday, May 23 from 9:00 a.m. to noon (at the latest) at A Better Tent City on Ardelt Avenue in Kitchener (beside the Board of Education Offices). A bit of light rain or drizzle won't stop us but thunder and lightning will, and our "Storm" date will be May 30. Some equipment will be needed - wheel barrows, shovels and garden tools.
